Tanya Baker’s experience with TFS began at just five years old and, over the course of 13 years, shaped the person she is today. Last year, the Class of 1998 graduate returned to campus as a proud alum to receive the Prix de Distinction des Anciens Élèves. Now, as a leader in technology and investment, she’s giving back to the school that played a pivotal role in her life.
Returning to TFS stirred memories of her time as a student. She recalls the vibrant community, the friendships that continue to this day and the rigorous education that challenged her. “I am who I am today because of my experience at TFS,” she reflects. This realization sparked a desire to give back, to ensure future generations would have the same opportunities to grow and explore.
A Path Shaped by TFS
Tanya’s gift to TFS is personal. Her passion for technology and innovation can be traced back to her school days, where she discovered her strengths in math, logic and problem solving. It was while attending a Scholars Dinner at TFS where a conversation about university motivated her to pursue computer engineering at McGill. This choice ultimately led her to working at Microsoft in Seattle and Goldman Sachs in New York.
During a recent visit to TFS, Tanya was introduced to the plans for the new Design Studio, a piece of the larger Thrive through STEAM priority. She was particularly drawn to the laser cutter proposal, a tool that empowers students to bring their ideas to life. “I met with this fabulous group of students, members of the TFS robotics team, who were doing incredible work in technology. Seeing how they depended on these tools really spoke to me,” Tanya recalls. “I loved the space, the thinking and the potential of the laser cutter. I hope it has longevity and that many students can benefit from it.” Giving Back
Tanya’s gift to support STEAM education at TFS reflects her belief in the importance of education and opportunity. “I wanted my gift to have an impact.” She also hopes her story will inspire other alumni to give back. “If you can help the next generation have an even better experience than you did, then it’s something worth really considering.” In recognition of her generosity, TFS will display a plaque in the laser cutter room, highlighting her support for this strategic priority.
Inspiring the Next Generation
Tanya’s story is a reminder that philanthropy is about legacy. It’s about ensuring that future generations have the tools and opportunities to dream big and achieve more. Through her generosity, she is helping to enhance a space where imagination and collaboration can flourish. The Design Studio is more than just a room, it’s a place where students put their ideas into action. And with Tanya’s contribution, TFS students will continue to transform their visions into reality for years to come.
